Ready for Ring Fit: World Building and Accessibility

We are less than one week away from the release of Ring Fit Adventure, and the more we learn, the more promising this game looks. With a quirky supporting cast, ingredients to gather for making protein shakes, and control alternatives for players with limited mobility or dexterity, this game demonstrates Nintendo’s standard: high-quality, meticulously crafted experiences that cater to a wide-ranging audience.

Impressions

I recently watched a video on CNET’s impression of the Ring Fit Adventure, and I’m impressed by how much of a workout the game seems to provide. Gameplay looks smooth, polished, and above all else, fun! Without a doubt, Nintendo’s signature seal of approval is stamped all over this one.

CNET’s impressions have me impressed with Nintendo’s latest IP.

Gameplay

In a gameplay trailer following their initial explainer video, Nintendo showed off an exploratory gameplay element where you can find ingredients in your environment to make protein shakes and smoothies. As someone who loves item hunting and collect-a-thons (see my article about my favorite fetch quest series here), I can’t wait to make these and improve my Adventurer’s abilities.

The gameplay trailer also showed off a well-designed, colorful supporting cast. They add a lot of spice to the overworld map and the general atmosphere of the game.

You can make smoothies!

Accessibility

When I first saw the announcement of Ring Fit Adventure, I thought about how the game might be inaccessible for people with limited mobility or dexterity. During my education in college thus far, I have learned become more conscious how people’s needs differ in the both physical and digital spaces.

To find an answer, I reached out to Nintendo’s support text line. After a few hours of waiting, someone got back to me with some information.

According to my contact at Nintendo support, in Adventure Mode, certain actions can be remapped to the assigned to button presses. Additionally, it is possible to change the category of a fit scale using certain in-game items. For example, Arm Skills can be used to inflict Leg Skill damage. I’m so glad to hear that Nintendo has options for players with limited mobility.

I pre-ordered the game today, and I can’t wait to get my new workout routine started next weekend.

Ring Fit Adventure is a fitness RPG created by Nintendo that will release on October 18, 2019. For more information, check out the game’s official website.
